Know Your Options When It Comes To Boat Storage

If you bought a boat to use during the summer months, you need to consider how you are going to store it during the cold winter months. You cannot simply leave the boat uncovered or else the elements and animals will be able to damage it badly. There are many options when it comes to storing your boat during winter. The guide below walks you through a few of the options to take into consideration.

Consider a Fabric Boat Cover

There are fabric boat covers that you can use to keep your boat from being destroyed during winter. There are covers that are made specifically for the type of boat you have, so you need to make sure that you take the time to order the right boat cover for your boat. A boat cover that is designed for a wakeboarding boat will not fit on a pontoon boat and vice versa. When purchasing a fabric boat cover, be sure to purchase one that comes with posts or inflatable space fillers that can be used to keep the fabric cover from collapsing when heavy snow piles on the boat during the winter.

Consider a Plastic Wrapped Boat Cover

You can take your boat to a professional boat mechanic and he or she can have plastic wrapped around the top of the boat to protect it from the elements. The wrap is shrunk around the boat to create a tight seal so that nothing can get into it and so that it does not collapse under the weight of snow during the winter.

Consider an Indoor Storage Unit

There are indoor storage units available that you can use to store your boat, as well. Choose a unit that is temperature controlled because you then do not have to worry about winterizing the engine to your boat. If you store your boat outdoors, you have to have the engine winterized so that the fluids inside do not freeze and expand. This could cause your engine to crack and be ruined. When storing it in a temperature controlled storage unit, you do not have to worry about it being exposed to the elements, animals damaging it, or the engine block being cracked during temperature drops.

When storing your boat, you need to read the storage contract thoroughly before signing it. You need to be sure that you can access your boat whenever you choose so that you can take it out of storage as soon as the nice weather hits, regardless of what time of year it is.
